THE CARNEGIE TO EXPAND PROGRAMMING WITH DIVERSE FILM SERIES
Building on a strong history of cinematic programming, community demand, and rapid artistic expansion across the organization, The Carnegie Visual and Performing Arts Center in Covington will launch Cinema Carnegie on Saturday, January 26 at 7:30pm with a showing of the Oscar winning 1988 classic Rain Man, beginning a string of eight showings of five films between January and June 2008. The January 26 showing of Rain Man will be preceded by a 6:00pm cocktail reception with appetizers from Pompilio’s.
Predicated upon the representation of multiple film genres and formats, Cinema Carnegie will include a diverse lineup of documentaries, “art house” films, short films, foreign films, and repertory classics. The series will also feature films with local connections, celebrating pieces filmed in the Greater Cincinnati area and those including filmmakers, directors, and actors with community ties. Partially shot in familiar locales including Pompilio’s restaurant in Newport, Rain Main joins poignant documentary A Lion in the House and horror flick Satanic Yuppies as a 2008 series selection with a special relationship to the area.
While the first dedicated movie sequence in the Otto M. Budig Theatre, Cinema Carnegie is by no means the only film programming taking place in the historic proscenium house. The 48 Hour Film Festival has called The Carnegie home for the past two years and will return in 2008, adding to a resume which has included the Underneath Cincinnati festival, a College Weekend Movie Fest, and a screening of Jay Bolotin’s woodcut motion picture film The Jackleg Testament. The Carnegie is also pleased to host in 2008 Conscious Choice Cinema, a five-show film series opening on January 23 with One: The Movie, a 2005 release which explores life’s deepest questions with the world’s spiritual leaders and the common man. More information on Conscious Choice Cinema is available at www.consciouschoicecinema.org.
Restored in March 2006, the 465-seat Otto M. Budig Theatre is and has been an excellent venue for film, according to Joshua Steele, Theatre and Facilities Manager at The Carnegie.
“The Budig Theatre has all the charm and quality of the famous movie palaces of the early 20th century,” says Steele, “augmented, of course, by a modern sound system and the ease of DVD screening. The intimacy of the space makes for an outstanding film-going experience, facilitating the detail and nuance that is so important to movie buffs.”
2008 Series Programming
Consisting of nine screenings January through June, the 2008 Cinema Carnegie series will feature five films with opening showings on the final Saturday of each month and encore presentations on the following Wednesday (excepting the Saturday, April 26 showing of Casablanca and the Saturday, May 31 showing of A Lion in the House.).
